Ramona L. Unangst, 61, of Rome, passed away on Wednesday, February 08, 2017 at Rome Memorial Hospital. She was born in Oneida on June 22, 1955, the daughter of the late James and Eileen Fox VanWinkle. She was a 1973 graduate of Rome Free Academy and earned an Associate's Degree in Human and Chemical Dependency from MVCC. ON August 11, 1973, she married Dana Unangst.
Ramona worked for several years at Rome Memorial Hospital before going on to retire from NYS Department of Corrections.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rome.
Ramona loved spending time with her cherished grandchildren and she shared her love and affection with hundreds of others who called her "Mom" and "Nonnie." She treasured them all more than anything because she lost her own mother as a young child. Her happiest moments over the years were watching her husband, whom she fell in love with in the 7th Grade, play the drums and riding their Harley Davidson together. She never missed a game or event that her children or grandchildren were involved in. She was truly a one of a kind woman, with a heart as big as the sky.
Surviving besides her beloved husband, Dana, are three daughters, Amanda (Eric) Holdridge of Syracuse, Kendra (Derek Kleban) Durante of Mohawk, and Lacey (Jon Francescone) Dryer of Rome; a son, Christian (Gregory Rees) Unangst of Kansas; two sisters, Marji Baldwin and Karen Madrigal, both of California; a brother, James (Josie) VanWinkle of Williamstown; six grandchildren, Hailee, Reagan, Gianna, Sophia, Brynn, and Rusten "Bear"; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Sandra Coady and Doreen Brewer; and a brother, Kenneth VanWinkle.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 4:00pm at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home prior to the service on Sunday from 1-4:00pm.
