Joan M. (Carney) McKenna, 81, of Rome, NY, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017, at the Jewish Home of Rochester, NY.
Joan McKenna was the youngest of five children born to James T. and Katherine V. (Murphy) Carney. Born in Camden, NJ, on December 11, 1935, Joan grew up in the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. She attended Catholic schools and graduated in 1953 from John W. Hallahan High School. She remained a proud Philadelphian at heart her whole life.
At age 17, while working at the US Naval Base in Philly, she met her sweetheart, Harry McKenna, whom she married on August 20, 1955 in Philadelphia. The couple moved to Potsdam, NY, where Joan was part of the staff for Dr. Satterlee at Potsdam State Teachers’ College. In 1957, the McKennas moved to Rome, NY, where they settled permanently. Over the years, along with raising a family, Joan enjoyed working various clerical positions at the Rome State School, New York State School for the Deaf, and Rome City Schools, where she was secretary of Columbus School for many years.
Joan brought her sharp, curious mind and caring heart to everything she did. She valued faith, family, and community. Joan was a long-time member of St. Mary’s/ St. Peter’s parish in Rome and was an active member of the South Rome Senior Center. She loved being part of her adopted hometown community.
Survived by sisters Rosemary Carney and Kathleen Carney, sisters in-law Marguerite Carney and Mary (McKenna) Gorman; daughters Kathleen McKenna, Marie Little (Christopher), and Patricia McKenna; grandchildren Danielle, Liam, Fiona, and Kevin; many favorite nieces and nephews, beloved cousins, and dear friends. Predeceased by her husband Harry McKenna (September 2010), parents, brothers James Carney and Joseph Carney.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at 8:45 AM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, followed by a Mass of the Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s Church where the Rev. Philip A. Hearn will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
