Ronald C. DeRuby, 73, of Rome, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 18, 2017. He was born in Rome on August 6, 1943, the son of the late Joseph DeRuby and Anastasia Markin Goraczkowski. He was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, Class of 1961. He went on to serve in the US Army during the Vietnam War.
Ron worked at Rome Cable Corp. and later Turning Stone Casino.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching the weekly PGA Tour events on television. He was also a big Cleveland Browns fan and rooted for the NY Yankees.
He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and John Urtz of Lee Center; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Eileen DeRuby of Stanley, NC; his former wife and best friend, Kathleen DeRuby of Rome, and her son, Stephen (Rosetta) St. Peter of Rome; five nieces and nephews and their children, Karen (Troy) Walden and their daughter, Carly, Renee (Mike) Tanis, Ryan (Beverly) DeRuby and their son, Grayson, Anastasia (Lou Orbach) Urtz and their son, Benjamin, and Kelly Heffernan and her children, Sam and Hayley; three step-grandchildren, Zachary, Madison, and Rylie: a special friend, Denny Parry; and the girls at DeMatteo's, who always looked after him. He was predeceased by a nephew, Eric DeRuby, and his step-father, Paul Goraczkowski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's Church on Wednesday at 10:30AM. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Tuesday from 4-7:00PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ron's memory may be made to the Rome Rescue Mission or the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
