Carl W. Sturtevant, Jr., 79, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at The Grand in Rome. He was born in Rome on January 13, 1939, the son of the late Carl W. and Eileen Dunn Sturtevant, Sr. He was a 1956 graduate of Rome Free Academy and attended Utica College. On February 4, 1978 he was united in marriage to Linda Kelley.
Carl was a chemist at Revere Copper Products for over 40 years.
Carl's life was filled with music. He was a member of the Mohawk Valley Frasers Pipe Band for more than 30 years. During that time he served as Pipe Sergeant, Quartermaster, Piping Instructor and Grade 4 Pipe Major. Proud of his Irish heritage, Carl also belonged to Comhaltas Ceoltoir Eireann where he played the bodhran and bagpipes. One of his great joys was attending school concerts when his grandchildren sang and played instruments.
Carl was also active in sports. He was a New York State Horseshoe Champion in his class and enjoyed playing hockey, basketball and racquetball. He coached softball and youth hockey.
He was also a Master Gardener, served on the Rome Federal Credit Union Board and the St. Paul's Parish Council. He was a member of the VIPS (Volunteers in Police Service). He also enjoyed sailing and was a member of the Lake Delta Yacht Club.
Surviving besides his loving wife of 40 years, Linda, are: three children, Mary Beth Cosentino and her significant other, Karl Bielby, of Rome, Robert Sturtevant of Rome, Christopher Sturtevant and his wife Lucie of South Carolina, and their mother, Lorraine Bauer; four sisters, Karen Simons, Mary (Tom) Shantz, Elizabeth (Steve) Leighton and Barbara Pallas, all of Rome; two stepchildren, Mark (Sheryl) Kelley of Buffalo and Scott (Kelly) Kelley of Durango, CO; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by a sister, Dianne Peters, and a brother, Dennis Sturtevant.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 1:00PM at St. Paul's Church with the Rev. Robert Kelly officiating. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Wednesday from 4-7:00PM.
