Shirley B. Augustine, 89, of Rome, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2017. She was born on November 25, 1927, to William and Bertha Wittwer Abbuhl. Shirley attended Verona High School where she became salutatorian of her 1945 graduating class. She went on to attend Utica Business School for secretarial studies. Upon graduation, Shirley was employed at the Beach Lumber Company in Rome. On October 21, 1950, Shirley was united in marriage to the love of her life Nicholas Augustine. After the wedding she worked with Nick on the family farm. When the children were older, Shirley decided to take a civil service test, and in 1967 became the first female postal worker at the Rome Post Office. Shirley carried mail door-to-door as well as drove a mail truck on rural routes.

Shirley was an active life-long member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Verona. Shirley enjoyed traveling with family and heading to Tarpon Springs, FL, every winter with Nick. One of Shirley's favorite things to do was searching for treasures at area flea markets, thrift stores & church sales. She loved reading romance novels, knitting, and was a premiere chocolate chip cookie baker - all family knew to check the "cookie drawer" for the latest batch. Shirley enjoyed game shows on TV & was an avid watcher of the reality show Cops.
