Obituary of Ann Gregory

Ann McGuinness Gregory, 97, of Acacia Village, Utica, died Sunday, December 10 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital after a brief illness.

Born on March 16, 1920 in New Hartford, Ann was the daughter of John and Agnes (Kuhn) McGuinness. She attended Chadwicks High School and graduated from Albany State Teachers College in 1942 with a BA in English. During WWII she worked as a secretary at Griffiss Air Force Base. Prior to her marriage she was on the faculty of the Excelsior School of Business. In later years she was co-owner and manager of a small gift shop in Rome, The Little Card Shop.

On June 5, 1948, Ann married Paul E. Gregory and settled in Rome to raise to raise a family. They had three children: Susan (Edward) Downing of Fayetteville, Paul (Patricia) Gregory of Seabrook Island, SC, and John (Barbara) Gregory of Victor. She had five grandchildren: Kate Hammond, Kirsten Krug, Sara Downing, Elizabeth Downing, and Matthew Gregory. She also had six great grandchildren who were the joy of her life.

Ann is predeceased by her husband, Paul and her brother, John L. McGuinness of Southbury, Ct.

Three years ago, Ann moved to independent living at Acacia Village in Utica where she made many new friends and continued to play bridge (her favorite activity) until a few weeks ago.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the nurses at St. Elizabeth's Hospital for the compassionate care they provided to their mother during the last 24 hours of her life. Thank you also to the loving staff at One Caring Place for providing support services in the last several weeks that allowed her to remain in her own apartment. We especially wish to thank all of the wonderful residents and employees at Acacia Village for making the last three years of her life meaningful and filled with joy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 15, 2017 at St. Paul's Church at 1:00PM. Interment will take place in St. Peter's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ann's memory may be made to Acacia Village, 2160 Bleecker St, Utica NY 13501.
