Obituary of Phylis B. Sexton
Phylis Marie Barber Sexton, 68, of Stittville, died Wednesday at St. Luke's Hospital, surrounded by her beloved family, after a long, courageous fight against cancer.
Born in Rome, New York in April of 1950, Phylis was the daughter of the late Felice & Jean Barber. She was a member of Transfiguration Church, and a proud graduate of the NY State GED Program for Adults as well as Volunteering for many community functions on behalf of her children and grandchildren. Phylis will be remembered and missed daily by her best friend, the most loving and most caring person she was ever fortunate enough to meet in her life, Husband Daniel L. Sexton, Sr. It was his love, dedication and relentless fortitude that coupled with her love for her family that motivated Phylis to fight and continually beat Stage IV Lung Cancer for over three hard, long and meaningful years.
Her unwavering love of family, Phylis' greatest pleasure in life came from being the consummate mother to her beloved two boys and she always touted her grandchildren as her greatest accomplishment in life and would beam with pride and joy when she spoke of them. There was little she wouldn't do for someone in need, but when it came to her family, especially her grandchildren, she was known as a force to be reckoned with.
Phylis will be graciously remembered with love by her sons, Dale Sexton and his wife Christina of Sarasota, Florida, and Daniel L. Sexton, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Stittville. Phylis will be remembered and immortalized by her five Grandchildren, Dylan, Alexis and Ashley Sexton of Sarasota, Florida and Kendall and Greyson Sexton of Stittville.
Phylis will be remembered as "Big Sis" by her Sister, Rosemary and Michael Dickey of Fort Myers, Florida, and four Brothers; Felix Barber of Port St. Lucie, Florida; Raymond and Gloria Barber of Taberg, NY; Leroy and Minica Barber of Pennsylvania; and Andrew Barber of Fort Myers, Florida.
Phylis will always be thankful and humbled by the family that accepted her into their wonderful and giving world on June 21, 1972, the day that she married her best friend Danny. She will be remembered by his Brother, Dale Owen Sexton and his late wife Jane Sexton of Floyd, NY; and sister-in-laws, Edna and Gene Bunal of Floyd, NY; Diane and Fred Cady of Holland Patent, NY; Beatty Howard and her late husband Charles Howard of Floyd, NY.
Phylis will always be referred to as "Aunt Philly" by several nieces and nephews who will remember her as an open, easy person to talk to that often made them feel very good about themselves upon conclusion. She just wanted everyone to get along.
Funeral services will be held Friday at the Townsend Cemetery in Stittville at 12:00 pm. Those attending the Burial are asked to go directly to the Cemetery to pay last respects. In lieu of flowers, or donations, Phylis and Family would instead request that each person take a moment to call, write (or preferably in person) tell someone close to them how much they love them and how truly special they are. That would be the greatest gift of all to her, and the greatest gift you could give a loved one.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome.
