Obituary of Catherine Pelano
Catherine E. Pelano, 102, of Rome, passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 5, 1916, one of ten children to the late Mykola and Martha Royko Zakala. She moved to Fort Montgomery as a child and lived there until the 1930s, when the family moved to Rome. She was a member of the 1934 graduating class at Rome Free Academy. Catherine was a member of St. Mary's/St. Peter's Church.
Catherine and her husband were avid antique collectors and dealers.
Catherine will be fondly remembered for faithfully corresponding with her four brothers, Steve, John, Michael and Russell, the entire time they were in the service during World War II when news from home was so very important. Her uncanny ability to communicate with wild birds was truly amazing. She fed them right off her windowsill. She was a true lover of nature. Catherine enjoyed her flowers, painting and furniture refinishing.
She is survived by: three sisters, Mary Remick, Anna Dole and Helen Edwards; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers, Richard, Russell, John, Steve, Michael and Peter Zakala.
Many thanks to the Betsy Ross Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
