Obituary of Mary H. Wittmann

Mary H. Wittmann, 93, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at the Grand of Rome. Born in Rome on May 5, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Adam and Mary (Redjives) Gorbach. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, Medaille College and Canisius College. Mary was a school teacher for 36 years, the first 19 in Buffalo and the last 17 in Batavia, where she taught at the New York State School for the Blind and St. Joseph’s School. When she moved back to Rome, she became a member of Transfiguration Church, a director of the Rome Polish Home and member of the Associates of Felician Sisters. She was active in the Golden Years Seniors and Top of the Hill Seniors. She is predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Lauri and Victoria Reinhardt and a brother, Francis Gorbach. Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 3rd at 1:00 p.m. at Transfiguration Church, 111 Ridge St., Rome. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday from 12-1:00 p.m. at the church prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
