Obituary of Walter G. Sanborn
Walter G. Sanborn, 96, of Rome, passed away on Monday, August 7, 2023 at Rome Health. He was born in Rome on January 4, 1927, a son of the late Willis and Evelyn (Rees) Sanborn. He was a graduate of Rome Free Academy and served in the United States Navy during World War II. After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy, Walter returned to Rome and on April 30, 1955, he was united in marriage to Patricia Gibbs. She passed away on November 29, 2018.
He enjoyed a long career at Rome Cable Corp., retiring after 44 years of employment.
Walter was a member of the American Legion, Rome Elks Lodge, and Master Gardeners. He also served as a Cub Master and Scout Master with the Boy Scouts. He was a very active member of the Rome First United Methodist Church, serving as Past President and member of the Board of Trustees and member of the Usher Society.
Walter was an avid golfer and played in several bowling leagues throughout the years. Later in life, he became interested in growing roses, many of which were shown in local garden shows and the New York State Fair.
He is survived by three children Karen Sullivan (John), Gary Sanborn (Lynnda) and Amy Stohl (Christopher); grandchildren, Eliza Sullivan, Amy Slocum (Zach), Christine Sullivan (David), John Sullivan, Elizabeth Stohl and Kristen Stohl; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Aurelian and Emmerich; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Viola Lincourt and Ruth Rutz; and three brothers, John, Ralph and Edward.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 14th at 10:00 a.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440. Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday, August 13th from 4-7:00 p.m.
