Obituary of James C Smith
James C Smith, 91 of Rome, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023.
He was born on November 2, 1931 in Edward’s, NY. A son of John W. Smith and Estella H. Vansant.
On April 14, 1956 he married the love of his life, Barbara Burns, and they were blessed with four beloved children and together embarked on a journey filled with love and shared dreams until her passing in 2000. James was a great friend, brother, and a dedicated family man.
James was proud of his service in the Army, spending two years in the Korean War.
For 38 years, James dedicated himself to the Rome State School, where he was known as “Smitty”. His commitment and hard work left a lasting impact on the lives of those he cared for. In addition to his full time role, he also worked part-time in construction and at Camden Wire.
Throughout his life, James was known for his passion and love for various activities. In his younger years, he excelled in high school baseball, even achieving the remarkable feat of pitching a no-hit game. His enthusiasm extended to basketball. On any given Sunday, James was in his recliner cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Some of his fondest memories were taking car rides up north with his wife and visiting his family. He enjoyed playing horseshoes with his brother Jerry, and visiting with his sister Jeanie. He loved spending time in his garage with his neighbor and dear friend, John Pereto “shooting the breeze”. He also loved working construction with a life long friend Lonny Deeley. James shared a love for old cars, in particular Mustangs, a love he passed on to both of his sons.
James loved his grandchildren and was often found behind the camcorder for football games and holiday get togethers. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and telling them stories and jokes. He loved seeing them smile and laugh, in return it would put a big smile on his face.
James had a special place in his heart for animals. He loved his cat Bootsie, Baby, and his dog Ford.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience that will be cherished for generations to come. James will be deeply missed but will live on in our hearts and the memories we all will continue to cherish.
