Obituary of Francis Duane Willson

Francis Duane (Dobie) Willson Jr. passed away at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Born in Rome on January 21, 1946, his was a son of the late Mary and Francis Willson Sr. He was a graduate of Rome Free Academy and enlisted in the United States Marines where he served multiple tours in Vietnam during the war.

Duane loved to workout and spent hours a day in the gym. At one time he was a champion powerlifter and won several bench press competitions throughout the United States. He was always trying to help others out with their strength training or exercise programs. Duane always was a strong supporter of the Special Olympics and helped to coach the weightlifters for several years.

 He is survived by a son Jodi and daughter Suzanne; two brothers, Donald Willson (Sue) and James Willson (Donna) and a sister; his oldest friend and ex, Patricia Knapp; good friend, John Gallager. He was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Leyden.
