Obituary: John F. Serway, 86, of Blossvale, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born on January 15, 1926, in Utica, the son of Fargo and Emily Karouf Serway. He was a graduate of Frankfort High School, Class of 1943, and went on to study at Utica College of Syracuse University where he majored in Business Administration.
John and his brother, George Serway, opened Serway Cabinet Trends in 1947. After his brother passed, John continued to be the owner and operator until 1978 when his brother, Alec, became a partner. John remained very active in the family business until a few days before his death.
He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1946 where he was an Aircraft gunnery instructor.
He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and an accomplished jazz pianist. He was a past member of the American Federations of Musicians and the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce. He was also a New York State Checker Champion early in his life.
John was an integral part in the opening of his daughter, Laura and her partner, Cindy's, restaurant, Laci's Tapas Bar in Syracuse. They will be forever thankful for his support and encouragement in their business.
Surviving are two daughters, Laura Serway and her partner, Cindy Seymour, of Syracuse, and Cynthia Serway, of CA; three sons, Steven Serway, of MA, Charles Serway, of Syracuse, and Kirk Serway, of Canastota; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Sophie Pelose, of Rome, Alice Puleo, of Sauquoit, Helen and Ronald Miner, of Rome, and Freda Orbinati, of Rome; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Raymond and Elizabeth Serway, of VA, and Alec and Joan Serway, of Clinton; a brother-in-law, Frank Traglia, of Utica; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. John was predeceased by a daughter, Eileen Serway; a brother, George Serway and his wife, Jeanette Serway Ischia; a sister, Virginia Traglia; and three brothers-in-law, Fred Pelose, Tino Puleo, and Albert Orbinati.
John's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., and Linda Birmingham, his personal care attendant for the past five years, for all the kindness and compassion shown to him.
Services: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, at 10:15 AM and a Mass of the Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Church where the Rev. Robert Kelly will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will take place in Rome Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
